Description
A cache of Gnostic writings discovered in Egypt in 1945, including the Gospels of Thomas, Philip, Truth, Mary, and Judas. All teach salvation by secret knowledge (gnosis), deny the physical resurrection, and often present a wicked creator god opposed to a higher "true" god.
Provenance
Discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt. Written by Gnostic sects the early church condemned as heretical (see Irenaeus, "Against Heresies," c. 180 AD).
Christian Assessment
Rejected by the early church for good reason. These texts are the very heresies Paul warned against (1 Timothy 6:20). Demonic in origin.
